Beautiful Firetail (Stagonopleura bella)

…a common and striking species of estrildid finch (Estrildidae) that is endemic to southeastern Australia, where its range extends from Newcastle to Kangaroo Island. It also occurs in Tasmania and other off-shore islands. Beautiful firetails typically inhabit temperate shrubland, coastal heathland, forests and other areas with significant shrubbery. They are also often found near water. Like other estrildids, beautiful fire tails feed mainly on grasses and are known to prefer Casuarina spp. and Melaleuca spp. They will also occasionally feed on insects and snails as well.
