The best thing about Frederick, MD, is the Civil War Medicine Museum. I went a couple weeks ago, and took some pictures of stuff that I found particularly interesting and that may be of interest to certain branches of the Les Mis fandom or anyone who just geeks out about 19th century medicine.
Stuff that I didn’t take pictures of: The giant-sized fleam used for bloodletting horses (yes, that was a thing, apparently), the amazing array of prosthetics (amputation being terrifyingly common), the actual mummified arm that was found on a nearby battlefield, the really nifty cart that was designed to carry basically an entire pharmacy/medical kit without stuff breaking (a real concern when all your medicines are in glass bottles), and the very wordy and very horrifying display about what sort of medical treatment one could expect if diagnosed with, say, syphillis.
Anyhoo, I highly recommend it if you’re in the area. Waaaay more stuff than you’d guess by its fairly innocuous storefront location.
