i was reading up on how separating syllables works in english bc i never learned that at my english courses and got curious
and now i understand why none of my teachers ever talked about it in class

- like. in most languages the actually spoken syllables are the basis of syllabification in writing too
- like.... 'written' syllables in english do not correspond to the actually spoken syllables of the language
- the word 'squirreled' for example. that's one syllable
- there's a list of the longest monosyllabic English words on wikipedia and it's startling
- written syllabification in english has to be based in etymological instead of phonetic principles
