here is what fucks me up: the epic of gilgamesh is the oldest surviving fictional narrative, and gilgamesh and enkidu are totally shippable
I KNOW RIGHT????? gilgy deciding not to get together with ishtar was totally out of an act of absolute gayness, i have been saying this since the beginning
it’s just bizarre because at first i was saying this as a joke but like it’s not even just that they’re “shippable”, it’s that they’re “shippable” in so many of the same ways and for so many of the same reasons that popular male/male fandom ship couples are in popular media today, like, you still see these tropes– “you changed me”, one being created “for” the other, the death angst, holding bodies in arms, journey to the underworld, coming to terms with things. like… is this some sort of deep deep human subconscious thing? did epic of gilgamesh start this particular type of homoromantic undertone or is this some primal human instinct that goes back even further than mesopotamia? this is just the oldest surviving, written story. and it was a recounting of a tale that was told orally through generations beforehand. how far back does yaoi go in human history? how far?
