i picked up my History of Virility books where i left them and i’m so glad i did
there’s like 5 pages just about depictions of codpieces in portraits back in the modern era. it was such a delight

- also dang portrait poses are so symbolic. there's all those tiny details a painter could add to signify their subject was Macho Macho Man
- and from when he was old and could barely walk bc of the gout (=NICE fucking thighs) and both of them serve to signify his virility
- and thus his right to rule as an absolutist king
- hand on waist? virile as fuck. youthful toned thighs+calves highlighted by satin stockings and high heeled shoes? so fucking virile
- i'm a mega history nerd r i p i could talk about this for hours
- of course his thighs never looked as nice as the paintings represent but it was all about sending a message
- the author compared a portrait of louis XIV of france from when he was young and athletic (=nice fucking thighs)
